Xeriscaping is one of the approaches used for creating sustainable landscaping. Xeriscaping does not mean “zero-scaping” where there is no landscaping. It is not large areas of rock, gravel, or dirt.
Landscaping accounts for 20-50% of all residential water use.
There is abundant opportunity for water conservation in the home
landscape. A sustainable landscape is one that uses less
inputs such as chemicals, water, labor, and so forth. It is still
lush, attractive, and a source of pride for the homeowner. A
sustainable landscape can be in any style. It is still created
using the design process.
During design though is given to methods of reducing inputs. This
is carried forward into the actual implementation of the plan by
considering materials, proportions or allocations of spaces, and long
term maintenance requirements.
